Event Structure and Support Verb Constructions
نویسنده
چکیده
Support Verb Constructions (SVCs) pose interesting problems because of their mixed nature, with idiomatic properties in the sense that they do not seem to comply with general rules, and yet displaying a large number of regularities. The problems we will be concerned with in this paper are the following: • What is event structure, and how is expressed in SVCs? • What verbs may function as support verbs (SVs), and to what extent is their behaviour predictable from their behaviour in other uses? • What is the relation between prepositions used in SVCs and locative prepositions? • What is a predicative noun, and how and what does it contribute to the semantics of the SVC? The data will be taken from Danish, and the analysis offered will be presented within the framework of HPSG (Pollard and Sag, 1994). (1) through (3) show examples of various SVCs: (1) Ane Ane havde had / fik got / bragte brought situationen situation the under under kontrol. control (2) Ane Ane gav gave Bo Bo et a slag slap / et a spark kick / et a kys.

The difference between "giving a rose" and "giving a kiss": Sustained neural activity to the light verb construction.
We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms associated with processing light verb constructions such as "give a kiss". These constructions consist of a semantically underspecified light verb ("give") and an event nominal that contributes most of the meaning and also activates an argument structure of its own ("kiss"). This creates a mismatch between the ...
متن کاملConstraints and Type Hierarchies for Korean Serial Verb Constructions - An Analytic Study within the HPSG Framework -
This paper provides a fine-grained analysis of Korean serial verb constructions within the HPSG framework, and covers major descriptive characteristics of the phenomena. This paper discusses constraints on serial verb constructions in terms of four aspects; transitivity, argument structure, semantic properties, and complementizers. As a result, 17 constraints have been built, which support the ...
متن کاملThe argument - time structure of recipient constructions in German
It is generally assumed that verbs have an ‘argument structure’, which imposes various constraints on the noun phrases that can or must go with the verb, and an ‘event structure’, which characterises the particular temporal characteristics of the ‘event’ which the verb relates to: this event may be a state, a process, an activity, an ‘event in the narrow sense’, and others. In this paper, it is...
متن کاملInvestigating Thematic Roles through Implicit Learning: Evidence from Light Verb Constructions
The syntactic structure of a sentence is usually a strong predictor of its meaning: Each argument noun phrase (i.e., Subject and Object) should map onto exactly one thematic role (i.e., Agent and Patient, respectively). Some constructions, however, are exceptions to this pattern. This paper investigates how the syntactic structure of an utterance contributes to its construal, using ditransitive...
متن کاملPredicting the Productivity of Argument Structure Constructions
Productivity has been a much-debated concept within morphology and word formation for years, while syntactic productivity has received little attention within the research community. In mainstream syntax, the concept of syntactic productivity is focused on speakers' ability to generate sentences never encountered before. This notion of productivity captures what has been labeled Linguistic Comp...
